Majadara
(Lentils and Burgul Wheat)

Ingredients

2 cups brown lentils 

1 cup burgul 

2 onions 

Vegetable oil for frying 

2 teaspoon salt 

 

1 teaspoon baharat 

Directions

• Chop the onions. 

• Fry the onions in oil in a pot, until very brown, almost black, about 30 minutes.  

• Add the lentils and 4 cups of hot water. Bring to the boil and reduce heat to low. Do not add salt until the lentils have started to soften, about 20 minutes. 

• Add salt and baharat to the lentils and continue cooking for another further 5 minutes. 

• When the lentils are soft, after approximately 1/2 an hour, add the burgul. Very gently mix everything together and continue to cook over very low heat for 10 minutes, until all the liquid has been absorbed. Wait 5 minutes till serving.
